LawBank Member Paul Miller Lectures on One-Page Business Plans
On February 26, 2020, estate planning and business law attorney Paul Miller hosted a CLE seminar for LawBank members at the CoBo location. Paul is a LawBank member and uses his background as a former teacher to develop a data-driven way of managing his law firm’s marketing strategies and goals. Attendees learned how to use these techniques in their own solo and small law firms.
One of the primary points raised by Paul during his presentation is the importance of keeping a three-ring binder of marketing information. The binder should contain information on how
each lead was acquired, how much it is worth, as well as closing percentages. This allows attorneys to figure out where to spend their time and how to adjust their business development strategies.
One of the key benefits of this process is how it helps attorneys hold themselves accountable for meeting their financial and business development goals.
Paul delved into setting goals and reviewing them regularly and shared some of his strategies for setting quarterly and annual goals. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging when a strategy is not yielding the desired outcomes and pivoting to a new approach, rather than continuing to pour time and money into an ineffective technique.
Paul also explored the importance of setting clear numeric and financial goals that allow attorneys to decide how much money they want to make each year and develop a clear, actionable plan for hitting that income level.
Furthermore, Paul noted that his system is habit driven. For many independent law firm attorneys, taking such a hands-on approach to business development and marketing is new, and they must take consistent action and build habits that reinforce their commitment to this part of their practice. Acknowledging the difficulty of getting into these habits, he recommended that attorneys using these strategies find an accountability partner with whom they can check-in and keep on track.
Attendees enjoyed learning these new marketing and business development strategies, which apply to independent law firms in every area of practice. You can learn more about the services offered by Paul Miller at The Law Office of Paul Miller, LLC.
