No matter how many times you have been told that you can do anything that you want, there are certain careers filled with men. Law is one of them. You have to work hard to succeed as a lawyer if you are a woman but it is possible.
Here are some tips for women in law.
- Realize that you are not a man and you work differently than a man. Not every lawyer wants to become a partner. You may be happy working part-time as a lawyer and that is just fine. You have to create your own happiness at work.
- Work hard to create a home/life balance that works for you. There are a lot of careers that require you to work a lot of hours. Working as a lawyer is one of them. You are going to have to strive to create a balance, especially when you have children. There are other alternatives to working towards becoming a partner.
- Support other women in the field. It is important to support other women in the field. How can any woman succeed without the help of another woman? You need to stick together.
Working as a woman in a field of men can be difficult. You are going to have to work harder to prove yourself but it can be done. You will have to figure out exactly what you want and strive to create a home and life balance, especially when you have children. Susan Smith Blakely summed it up in her article in the Huffington Post “Success can mean full-time and partnership track, but it also can mean part-time practice, public service, public interest, academia, in-house counsel and other practice options that allow for greater flexibility.” She also recommends helping other women instead of putting them down. They are trying to succeed in the same field of men, just as you are!
