“Foster Resilience and Professional Growth for Lawyers in a COVID-19 World,” with Nancy Sharp

LawBank offered its solo and small law firm community a presentation hosted by Nancy Sharp on resilience and professional growth during COVID-19. Nancy is an award-wining author and motivational speaker. She is known as the Bold Living Expert and presents a range of interactive, customized programs to attorneys focused on resilience, change and overcoming adversity.

This program centered on defining resilience in a legal context, analyzing “The Resilience Framework,” and answering three foundational questions. Nancy began the presentation by discussing emotional intelligence (EQ). She shared that emotional intelligence is the biggest indicator of performance in the workplace and is the strongest driver of leadership and personal excellence. On average, professionals with high EQs earn $29,000 more annually than their low EQ counterparts. Nancy explained the importance of emotional intelligence, emphasizing the statistic that 90 percent of top performers have high EQs. She then asked program participants what it means to be resilient. According to the American Psychological Association, it means “the ability to bounce back from difficult experience.” However, Nancy explained that resilience is much more than that. It requires a sense of optimism and comes from within. Nancy connected with participants by sharing details of her personal journey with becoming resilient, overcoming grief and making bold changes.

Nancy committed to teach the LawBank community skills to be resilient. One tool she used was The Resilience Framework. She explained it as having the same structure as a house, where you start with the foundation and have essential pillars. Included in the foundation are three questions: 1. Where do I feel challenged? 2. How can I reframe possibilities? and 3. How can I expand my path of opportunity? Nancy walked participants through each question and then moved on to “The Four Pillars of Support.” These pillars include self-awareness, empathy, reasoned decision-making, and growth and change. Finally, Nancy concluded with signs of “stuckness,” and provided resources on how to address challenges. She recommended utilizing books, YouTube videos, Ted Talks, and colleagues. She provided participants with a “5-4-3-2-1 Method,” from motivational speaker Mel Robbins, that helps jumpstart the day and empowers people to get tasks done when they are struggling to find motivation. Nancy provided each participant with a supplemental worksheet that included space to commit to at least one action step, utilizing the takeaways from the day’s program.
