LawBank Hosts Ethics CLE on Modern Lawyering

On December 10, 2019 at their CoBo location, LawBank was pleased to welcome back Jonathan White of the Colorado Supreme Court’s Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel for an educational seminar on modern lawyering. Over the lunchtime hour, members received professional advice and guidance from Jonathan White as well as independent law firm owners Erika Holmes and Lauren Lester on how to create alternative billing models in their practice.

The presentation started with a review of Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct section 1.2(c), which cover the scope of representation and allocation of authority between an attorney and client. During the discussion, Jonathan explored examples of reasonable limitations and explained an attorney’s duty of competence.

From there, Jonathan moved on to section 121 of the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure, which outline local rules and statewide practice standards. In particular, his presentation explored the entry of appearance, withdrawal from an active case, and notice of limited representation. Other topics covered during this part of the presentation include sections 11 and 311 of the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure.

Near the end of the presentation, Erika and Lauren turned the focus to actionable tips for attending lawyers. They discussed how alternative fee arrangements work well for their family law practices. They covered key points including the scope of a lawyer’s representation, documentation of client-lawyer communications, and assessment of client satisfaction.

LawBank is grateful to Jonathan White of the OARC for his informational program and commitment to helping our lawyer members in their professional development. This CLE was recorded and webcasted by US Legal Support.
