Denver Employment Lawyer Susan Klopman Shares Insight on the CARES Act and Gig Economy
On May 15, 2020, well-known Colorado employment lawyer Susan Klopman presented, as a part of the LawBank Lunch-and-Learn series, her thoughts on the how the CARES Act can be applied to the gig economy. The presentation was recorded and provides an overview for business attorneys wishing to advise independent contractors and sole proprietors about receiving unemployment benefits under this recent legislation.
The gig economy allows independence for many workers, but at the cost of not having traditional employment benefits. Thus, prior to the CARES Act, independent contractors typically could not collect unemployment insurance benefits if released from work for their clients. Under the CARES Act, gig workers and sole proprietors who are impacted physically or financially by COVID-19 are eligible for unemployment benefits through state unemployment agencies, as subsidized by the federal government.
