Sara S. Scott LLC

Sara provides compassionate and sensible representation to individuals in all types of family law matters. Sara’s approach to each case, while individualized, strives to enable clients to make dignified choices that keep the best interest of the child at the forefront, while ensuring that the client’s interests are protected and zealously represented. Sara is a trained mediator and Collaborative divorce practitioner and believes that pursuing alternative dispute resolution is often the most effective and efficient way to resolve family matters. However, Sara is an experienced litigator and understands that the pursuit of fairness, at times, may require an aggressive approach. Sara is also passionate about family formation and represents intended parents in adoption and assisted reproductive technology matters with a particular interest in helping same sex couples form families and protect their rights.

Sara is a Denver native and recently moved home from Washington DC to be closer to family and raise her son in a more balanced environment. In DC, Sara was a founding partner of Zamani & Scott LLP where she provided full service representation to individuals in the areas of adoption, assisted reproductive technology and custody/divorce matters. Sara regularly litigated complex custody and financial cases in both DC and Maryland and was also appointed by the court to serve as a guardian ad litem in complicated custody disputes. Sara also frequently represented individuals in domestic violence matters (both petitioners and respondents) and was on the World Bank’s preferred attorney list for this type of cases.

Sara began her career with DC Children’s Law Center (CLC), where, in fall 2005, she was chosen to join a handful of guardians ad litem representing children in the DC abuse and neglect system. At CLC, she received extensive training and became skilled at thoroughly investigating each case, making objective recommendations to family court judges, effectively communicating with families in crisis, and providing holistic representation to her clients. During her five years at CLC, she personally represented dozens of children and, upon being promoted to Supervising Attorney, oversaw several junior attorneys in over one hundred cases. Sara loved her time at CLC where she learned a tremendous amount about zealous advocacy and what it means to be deeply involved with families in despair.

Sara was incredibly active in DC’s family law community and has continued that involvement since moving back to Denver. She was elected to serve on the DC Bar Family Law Section Steering Committee (2011-2014), and was the co-chair in 2013-2014.  Sara has been featured in courses offered by DC Bar’s Practice Management Advisory Service for successfully starting and growing a law practice. She has been a guest lecturer at American University Washington College of Law and Georgetown Law School in the areas of family law, assisted reproductive technology and children’s rights. She served on boards of the Collaborative Projects of Maryland and DC, organizations charged with offering Collaborative to low income families (2010-2014). She was a member of the District of Columbia Association of Collaborative Practitioners (2010-2015) and board member of the Collaborative Dispute Resolution Professionals of Maryland (2012-2014).

Sara currently serves on the 2016 ADR Conference Planning Committee. She is a member of the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations and the Family Law Section. Sara is the Outreach Coordinator for the Mediation Association of Colorado and volunteers with Jefferson County Mediation Services. Sara has also completed over 100 hours of training with the Coaches Training Institute. She also completed the 40-hour Child Family Investigator (CFI) training in April 2016, and will be added to the CFI roster in July 2016.

Sara was selected to be a Super Lawyer in Washington, DC by her community of peers in 2015 and 2016. She was also selected to the Super Lawyers Rising Stars List for Washington, DC in 2013 and 2014.

Sara received her Juris Doctor from The George Washington University Law School, and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University, where she was awarded Stanfords Community Building Award. Sara is a graduate of East High School, and lives in Park Hill with her husband and son.
